Our cause

Keep the waters alive.

The festival sits beside Ashtamudi Lake. Climate change is its social cause, and it begins with the water at its door.

The lake

Ashtamudi,
a Ramsar wetland.

Ashtamudi is listed under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. Its name means eight braids: eight arms of water reaching into Kollam.

The Kallada river flows into it, and it opens to the sea at Neendakara, so its water is brackish: part river, part sea. Mangroves line its edges. Fishers, clam collectors and the karimeen, Kerala’s state fish, all depend on it.

Like wetlands everywhere, it is under pressure: from plastic and waste, from what drains into it, and from a warming climate.

A wide, still lake at dusk with palm islands on the horizon, a wooden jetty with an open book, and leaves in the foreground.
